Unlike the internal thread, which is cut out using a special tool – tap, to create an outer thread, T. n. Dies. Choosing a suitable dick is quite simple, you only need to know the three mandatory criteria: type of thread, its diameter and step (the thread of the thread is called the distance between the turns).
To use the dick, you need only one additional tool – a dress holder. He plays the role of a clamp and is suitable for different sizes. So, the dies up to 10 mm require the smallest clamp, the average clamp is suitable for a diameter of 12-24 mm, and large holders are used for dies with a diameter of 27-42 mm.
There are quite a few varieties of dies, but we will consider the types that are most common in everyday life and production:
Metric
Pipe
Conical pipe
Left -handed
Metric dies (marking “M”)
Designed for cutting standard cylindrical threads. The diameter is measured in millimeters. Section size range – from 1 to 60 mm.
Pipe dies (marking “G”)
In the vast majority of cases, a pipe dick is needed to cut the threads for pipes. This thread is used practical in all water supply systems of residential buildings.
The difference in the metric and pipe thread is not only in the field of application, but also in the measurement system used. Diameters of the dicks with the marking “G” are measured in inches (25.4 mm). Dimensions vary from 1/8 to 2 inches.
Below are the most popular sizes of pipes (left – marking, on the right – pipe diameter):
G 0.5 – pipe 15 mm
G 0.75 – 20mm
G 1 – 25 mm
G 1.25 – 32 mm
Conical pipe dies (marking “k”)
The section length is measured in inches. When using such dies, the thread acquires a conical shape. The usual area of use of conical dies – in production (for example, for machines or pipes for supplying fuel).
Left -sided dies (labeling “LH”)
The rarest of the above types of thread. It is used in rotational mechanisms that work counterclockwise (for example, in a drill cartridge).
As for the quality of the dicks – almost all of them are made of steel type XCC, 9xc or P6M5. However, sometimes you can stumble upon older Soviet dies made of steel type P18. Despite its dilapidation, these dies are in most cases much better than modern. So, if you found Soviet samples, feel free to use them, even if they look slightly in appearance.
